FAQs

Dry Lining

What is dry lining?

Dry lining refers to cladding walls and ceilings via plasterboard to create a smooth surface that paint can be applied directly to without the need for a ‘wet’ plaster finish.

What is the difference between dry lining and plastering?

Where plastering involves applying wet plaster material directly to a wall or ceiling before smoothing it out and waiting for it to dry and harden, dry lining involves a sheet of pre-hardened plaster that is stuck onto the surface via adhesive or nails.  Each has their own pros and cons so it’s worth researching which is best for your own personal situation.

Can I paint dry lining?

Yes, you can paint dry lining. In fact, it is very simple and easy to do so once any joints have been covered and an initial mist coat is applied first. This helps to seal the plasterboard and reduces the risk of the next coat of paint from soaking in as much.

What is the cost?

To dry line an average room, you’re looking at a price tag of around £700-800. This includes the cost of labour as well as the cost of materials, as the average room could take a full work day to complete. This is also subject to change depending on factors like whether you want to use dry lining panels with special properties such as moisture resistance. (Quote form)

Plastering

Why is plaster used?

Plastering a wall is crucial to ensuring sturdy walls and ceilings in your home, as well as leaving them with a smooth and professional finish.

Why does plaster crack?

There are several reasons why plaster on walls begin to crack. The main reason is usually down to the plaster and render shrinking in the drying process, especially if there are no supporting materials to reduce this risk such as synthetic fibres.

Other than that, cracks in your plaster can appear from the invisible shifts that happens to your wall, including movement of moisture or heat throughout it.

What is the cost? (Quote Form)

The cost of plastering, as is with dry lining, depends on several factors including what size of room you are plastering, but to plaster a medium-sized room, expect to put down up to £900 for 2/3 days of work. If that same room only needed a little touch-up, skimming it may be the most sensible option. Skimming is much less labour-intensive and is therefore much cheaper, up to £200 cheaper for the average room.
